The copyright notice should always be placed on any work for which a copyright is claimed. While the notice is no longer required by law, it still provides many advantages, including providing notice to the world that a copyright is claimed on the work and that it is not in the public domain.
Unlike trademark, there is no difference in a copyright notice between a registered and unregistered copyright. A copy right notice will look like the two examples below, both of which indicate that the ABC Company is claiming a copyright on the work which was created in 2003 and to which new material was added in 2004:
Copyright, 2003-2004, ABC Company
or
© 2003-2004, ABC Company
It is permissible to use either the word "copyright" or the symbol "©" in the notice.
The year designation refers to the year the work was created and the year(s) any additional material was added to the work.
